Khama distinguished his reign with the desire and ability to extract technological innovations from Europeans while resisting their attempts to colonize his country.
Bechuanaland advancements under Khama included the building of schools, scientific cattle breeding, and the introduction of a mounted police corps which practically eliminated all forms of crime.
Respect for Khama was exemplified during a visit with Queen Victoria of England to protest English settlement in Bechuanaland in 1875. The English honored Khama and confirmed his appeal for continued freedom for Bechuanaland.

about the achievements of legendary leaders such as Nefertan,
Shamba Bolongongo, Hannibal and many others. Each portrait in the
series is the work of a talented African-America artist.
So peace loving was Khama, that on several occasions he surrendered control of his kingdom to his father, Sekhomi, who despised Khama’s conversion to Christianity. The Bamangwato tribe displayed strong affection and support for Khama, however. Once, when Khama departed for a self-imposed exile, most of the tribe gathered their belongings to follow.

First African Baptist Church vibrates with music and prayers on Sunday morning. As the oldest black church in North America it has been inspiring its congregation since 1777 -- inspiring with its unusual history and secrets.
Deacon Harry James took reporters down to the first floor of the church where the
story is best told. He points his cane towards the pine floorboards. "There is about four feet of space below this floor. That space was used
as a hiding space for slaves, part of the "Underground Railroad." Holes in the floor disguised in the pattern of a diamond were used as

Oldest Black Church Holds Close Its Historical Past
Deacon James says the spaces led to tunnels which ended at the Savannah River. The carefully mastered plan came from the designers of the church.
It was mostly slaves and free blacks who built First African Baptist at 23 Montgomery Street in Franklin Square. While the Montgomery address is the final building for the congregation, First African Baptist began when George Leile was permitted by his slave owner to preach to other slaves in 1773.
Leile's followers met in barns and other make-shift plantation churches. A remarkable start which set the groundwork for other slaves and free blacks to complete construction of the church on Montgomery Street in 1859.
"They came here working late evening and night to erect this building after most of them had already worked 12 to 16 hours for their slave owners," Deacon James says.
What the slave owners didn't know is that many slaves were escaping through the secret escape spaces. That courageous act, more than a century ago, has a tremendous impact on the modern-day congregation.
"It is very inspiring to know that children, mothers, fathers hid," said church member Harrison Grantham. "The prayers that they may have prayed underneath those tunnels in the darkness just so one day people like myself can worship for free."
Worshiping at First African Baptist Church are grandmothers in their 1920's hats, teenagers, and elderly men in their three-piece suits. They sing prayers with loud pride.
They are surrounded by walls painted hant blue, a color West African slaves believed would keep away evil spirits. Another reminder of their ancestors can be seen on some of the pews in the church. Engraved are squiggly lines which are actually tribal signatures left by the slaves when they completed construction.
The African symbols in this church are a part of our heritage, a legacy left by our African brothers and sisters," says Gladys Cohen, who has been worshipping at the church for almost 50 years. "It's a part of us knowing where we come from so we will know where we are going."
"It shows me we had a great deal of power, a lot more than I thought we did." says worshipper Quentin Odem, 20. "It inspires me to push on and to let me know there is nothing that can hold me back from what I want to do."
That inspirational energy is nothing new to First African Baptist Church. One of its pastors was Pastor Ralph Mark Gilbert, one of the fathers of the civil rights movement. Many members of the congregation at that time were inspired by their preacher and the history of the church to fight discrimination during the civil rights movement.
Church member and NAACP member Grover Thorton organized successful boycotts during that period with other NAACP members.
"This historic church of these people that were strong... we were able to carry on a tradition that they were trying to get us to do," Thornton says.
It's been about 40 years since the civil rights movement and more than a century since slavery. Today's congregation worships with smiles and in freedom.
Young Pastor Thurmond N. Tillman closes his sermon on this Sunday morning by reminding members, "We're a historic congregation with a modern day determination... Amen."

other minority groups combined. There aren't enough
organizations working for the good of African American Male Health
collectively. Most organizations have chosen a specific health
disparity to address, while not realizing that with African American
Men, most health disparities have co-factors.

This question to directed to all but specifically to our Christian
members.
Is it always wrong to lie? Moreover, is it wrong for Christians to
lie? Are there cases in which Christians are allowed to tell a lie
or to tell a "White lie"?
The Holy Bible also says: He that telleth "lies" shall not tarry in
my sight.
Situation:
In church we are always told that it is wrong to lie.
A lot of times I hear people say the following: "One thing about me, I don't lie".
Others will say: "I can't stand a lier".
Maybe there are different kinds of lies or different types of
circumstances in which a lie is the acceptable or the normal thing to
do. If so, then, it is not always wrong to tell you lie, right?
If this is true then how can Christian Ministers say that it is wrong
to lie?
Before posting your comments, reflect back to the last time you told a lie (I'm sure you won't have to reach back too far) and think about why the lie was told.
